Review underway of Canadian Navigable Waters Act

Publishing Date

Transport Canada is conducting a legislative review of the Canadian Navigable Waters Act (CNWA) and is inviting input from local governments.

The Act employs a regulatory framework to address potential interferences in navigable waters, including works, human-made obstructions, and prohibited activities such as the throwing or depositing of materials and dewatering.

Interested local governments are encouraged to review the discussion paper, which is open for comments until May 5, and to complete the online questionnaire by May 24.

Any questions or concerns, please contact the CNWA Legislative Review Team.
