Active transportation is an important feature of livable, healthy communities. In addition to administering funding for active transportation planning, UBCM was involved in a project called, Small Town Leaders in Active Transportation, which aimed to identify challenges related to active transportation in BC small communities; share successes and challenges in active transportation in small communities; and build the active transportation capacity of local governments in small towns.
The 2020-2021 project was managed by the BC Alliance for Healthy Living, which was created in 2003 to advocate for healthy public policy and create healthier communities for all British Columbians. The Alliance focuses on physical activity, tobacco and vaping reduction, and healthy eating/food security. UBCM is a founding member of the Alliance, which includes twelve non-governmental organizations, health authorities, and representatives from the Ministry of Health.
