Provincial funding for NG911 implementation

As part of a $150 million investment towards the implementation of Next Generation 911 (NG911) services, the Province has provided $60 million to local governments, to be distributed through UBCM. This funding will help local governments address the costs associated with the transition to NG911. A funding program is currently under development. 
 
Eligible local government expenses will include those related to staffing, training, and the development of policies, processes and other necessary materials. A full list of eligible expenses will be provided once the funding program is finalized. The Province’s $150 million funding commitment also sees E-Comm 911 receive $90 million for its transition costs, including necessary technological improvements.
 
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has mandated that all provinces and territories transition from the current analog 911 system to an internet-based system that offers expanded Next Generation 911 services. New features include video streaming, data integration, improved location accuracy, as well as text, photo and picture messaging. The deadline to complete this transition is March 4, 2025.
 
Improving the emergency communications framework is a long-standing local government issue, and one that UBCM continues to advance.
