Public Safety Canada, RCMP to discuss collective agreement

Publishing Date

Following a UBCM request, Public Safety Canada and the RCMP have agreed to discuss the RCMP collective agreement with BC local governments. The billing for and collection of retroactive payments will be a key element of these discussions. Interested local government representatives are asked to RSVP by Friday April 29.

The federal government recently delivered letters to RCMP contract partners outlining estimated retroactive amounts owed as part of the new RCMP collective agreement. As part of its follow-up, UBCM has secured the following one-hour virtual meetings with Public Safety Canada’s Assistant Deputy Minister and the RCMP’s Chief Financial Officer:

  • Monday May 9, 2022 @ Noon – BC local governments over 15,000 in population that receive RCMP police services.
  • Tuesday May 10, 2022 @ 11:00 AM – BC local governments between 5,000 and 14,999 in population that receive RCMP police services.
  • Tuesday May 10, 2022 @ Noon – BC local governments under 5,000 in population that receive police services through the RCMP Provincial Service.

UBCM representatives will deliver a short presentation to attendees in advance of these meetings, providing an update on the issue and ongoing advocacy, including a call for the federal government to cover all retroactive costs associated with the RCMP collective agreement.

Meetings have been secured to ensure that B.C. local governments, including those policed by the RCMP Provincial Service, have a venue to deliver feedback related to the RCMP collective agreement. Among other things, these virtual discussions will provide a chance to pose questions and outline challenges related to the billing and collection of retroactive payments, including examples of how the associated costs are impacting local governments.

To participate, local government elected officials and staff are asked to contact Bhar Sihota, UBCM Senior Policy Analyst, by April 29, 2022.
