Communities interested in being on the front lines of testing new and emerging transportation micromobility technologies (such as e-scooters) are invited to submit proposals for pilot projects to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure by March 6, 2020.
Recently the Ministry released its Motor Vehicle Act Pilot Project Proposal Package for communities interested in establishing pilot projects as a result of the recent changes to the Motor Vehicle Act. The proposal package outlines the process and timelines for pilot projects.
Interested local governments and Treaty First Nations are invited to submit proposals for micromobility pilot projects for potential implementation by way of provincial regulation in the summer of 2020. The Ministry will accept proposals until March 6, 2020 at 4:00 pm.
Made possible by recent amendments to the Act, a micromobility pilot project enables the Province and participating communities to explore the potential of new and emerging transportation modes to move people safely and efficiently while reducing traffic congestion.
A pilot project regulation may remain in force for a maximum of 3 years, during which time the participating community will be able to test and evaluate how to regulate micromobility devices in a local context. Several municipalities have already expressed interest in piloting the regulation of e-scooters to transform how residents move around their communities.
Pilot projects for zero-emission micromobility devices support the provincial Active Transportation Strategy objective of working with communities to promote and enable active transportation use, as well as the CleanBC priority of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
