The Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act is now accepting written, audio and video submissions regarding policing and public safety. Interested parties have until April 30, 2021 to submit feedback via the Special Committee’s consultation portal. The Special Committee, following its review of the submissions, may seek to invite select stakeholders to deliver presentations.
There will be additional opportunities for stakeholder engagement, although the Special Committee has yet to release details. Local governments seeking to receive updates on the Police Act modernization initiative may contact the Parliamentary Committees Office to be added to an email distribution list.
Last year the Province announced that it would be initiating a review of the Police Act. An all-party Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act has been established to review legislation and deliver a final report by October 8, 2021. As part of this process, UBCM delivered a submission, supported by a presentation to the Special Committee, in February.
