WHEREAS the UBCM funding for Road Safety has been very important to our community and our community has responded with significant partnerships; AND WHEREAS the Road Safety programs we have been able to implement with a modest level of funding have been successful with minimal administration; AND WHEREAS our community will benefit from ongoing Road Safety Funding and we would recommend that other local governments consider similar opportunities to save lives: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Province of British Columbia continue the partnership with UBCM in distributing funding to Road Safety Projects.

Provincial Response

MINISTRY OF COMMUNITY SERVICES The Province of British Columbia is committed to the continual improvement of road safety through its partnership with the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. While the initial intent of funding was to assist communities in establishing road safety commissions, lack of overall participation meant the funding was directed into six pilot projects instead. Evaluation of these projects will be undertaken in late 2007 to determine the success of these projects, including developing best-use strategies and further improvements for road safety throughout British Columbia.
