Whereas transportation corridors are critical pieces of infrastructure; And whereas provincial spending on transportation is insufficient to maintain provincial highways and bridges across the province; And whereas climate emergencies are emerging more frequently: Therefore be it resolved that UBCM lobby the Province to increase the annual budgeted figure for roads and bridges.

Provincial Response

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure The ministry is making important safety and climate-ready investments in all corners of the province to keep people safe on the roads they rely on. Budget 2022 includes 808 million over the next 3 years for highway corridor rehabilitation to support resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, bridge replacement and seismic upgrades. 424 million over the next 3 years for side road improvements to support gravelling, drainage, road base improvements, brushing, shoulder improvements and culvert replacement. The ministrys design guidelines require the consideration of future climate events in all designs of provincial highway infrastructure through the use of climate prediction models. We will continue working to ensure that the supports and services that we invest in are working for people, businesses, and communities, today and into the future.
