WHEREAS research has proven that working smoke alarms save lives and protect property, but many homes in British Columbia do not have this essential and basic form of fire protection; AND WHEREAS insurance companies have direct contact with their clients on an annual basis, and a vested interest in ensuring the homes they insure are safe from fire: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that in an effort to reduce fire fatalities and losses in our province, UBCM call for changes to BCs Insurance Act to make the purchase or renewal of home or contents insurance contingent on a declaration by the policy applicant that there is a working smoke alarm in the home.
