WHEREAS the current provisions of the Criminal Code that govern the lawful interception of private communications were enacted in 1974 and have not been adapted to meet the challenges of modern technology and trends such as high speed Internet, wireless telecommunications devices, deregulation of the telecommunications industry, global and cross border criminal activity and cyber crime; AND WHEREAS the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the Canadian Association of Police Boards have approved numerous resolutions over the past several years requesting that the federal government take action to address the technological and cost challenges facing the police with respect to lawful access: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities be requested to call upon the provincial government to work with its federal counterparts to ensure that Bill C-46, the Investigative Powers for the 21st Century Act An Act to Amend the Criminal Code, the Competition Act and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act, is enacted as a matter of priority.
