WHEREAS the Council of the District of Tumbler Ridge is concerned that the current economy has resulted in high rental rates which has affected the ability of residents on low and fixed incomes to acquire housing; AND WHEREAS the fixed income of some pensioners or people with disabilities in Tumbler Ridge is insufficient to meet even the basics of food and shelter; AND WHEREAS the District of Tumbler Ridge does not have a large social safety net as may be found in other larger communities and the costs of living are higher in the north: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of British Columbia Municipalities be requested to petition the Province of British Columbia to improve housing services, financial assistance and increased living allowances for low income northern residents.
