WHEREAS the responsibility for highway maintenance within the Province of BC has been contracted to private firms; AND WHEREAS the level of highway maintenance within the Shuswap has deteriorated such that public safety is a concern; AND WHEREAS the apparent lack of maintenance year round, including but not limited to winter snow removal in a timely manner and quality pothole and surface maintenance on the Trans Canada Highway within the Shuswap east and west of Sicamous, and on Highway 97A south of Sicamous and areas within the Okanagan Shuswap results in dangerous conditions for drivers and passengers of all vehicles: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities request that the Ministry of Transportation take immediate steps to ensure its maintenance contracts are adequate and contractors are inspected to ensure the terms of the contract are met and to enforce the terms of its highway maintenance contracts to ensure that safe highway conditions are provided year round within the Province of BC.
