Province Updates Flood Emergency Plan

Publishing Date

As a means to address the growing impacts of climate change and anticipated future flooding events, the Province has updated BC's Flood Emergency Plan. The updated Plan reflects an increased emphasis on collaboration and the four pillars of emergency management (mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery).

The Plan provides a high-level description of flood management roles and responsibilities for local authorities, provincial ministries and First Nations. It includes information regarding:

  • Authorities and agreements related to flooding.
  • Flood hazards, risks and resources.
  • Provincial structures within flood management.
  • Roles and responsibilities related to each of the four pillars of emergency management.

Updates were conducted in consideration of the Abbott/Chapman independent report on the 2017 flood and wildfire seasons; draft principles that guide the Province's relationship with Indigenous Peoples; the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction; and, Gender-Based Analysis Plus.
