UBCM is currently seeking nominations to the Local Government Policing Modernization Roundtable (LGPMR), a forum for local government input into the ongoing Police Act and public safety review. Local government elected officials and staff members interested in participating have until May 24, 2024, to apply.
The UBCM Executive will appoint up to four new members (for a two-year term) to the roundtable, which is co-chaired by UBCM and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. Appointments will be made with consideration towards ensuring the Roundtable has representation from staff and elected officials; urban and rural local governments; and communities policed by the RCMP and municipal police agencies.
Roundtable members will be asked to:
- Participate in monthly Roundtable meetings (held virtually),
- Review materials in advance of each meeting,
- Provide input to the Province on behalf of BC local governments, and
- Sign a confidentiality agreement in order to participate in the policy development process.
Elected officials shall be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses, in accordance with UBCM policy.
Following the introduction of the Province’s phase one amendments earlier this year, the Roundtable is currently focussed on delivering input as part of phase of the review. These policy-focused discussions pertain to priorities held by a variety of stakeholders including the Province, local governments, police agencies and First Nations.
Interested parties are asked to contact Bhar Sihota, UBCM Senior Policy Analyst, by 4:30 pm on May 24, 2024.
