Consultation open for draft Salmon Aquaculture Transition Plan

Publishing Date

Consultation on Canada’s draft Salmon Aquaculture Transition Plan is underway. The plan provides a basis for engagement with coastal communities, First Nations, and other stakeholders on the transition to closed containment salmon farms.

The plan outlines a path in four key areas:

  • Support for First Nations, workers, and communities through this transition,
  • Identifying economic supports for the adoption of innovative and clean aquaculture technology,
  • Milestones, principles, and criteria for the phase down of salmon open net-pen aquaculture, and
  • Management of open net-pen salmon aquaculture until the ban is fully implemented.

Written submissions on the Draft Transition Plan are due by January 17, 2025 via email.

Meetings (in person and virtual) are being scheduled by Fisheries and Oceans Canada with representatives of the Interdepartmental Task Force on Salmon Aquaculture Transition in British Columbia (Task Force). Requests can be made via email by December 20 to schedule meetings with the Task Force between now and mid-January 2025.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada plans to extend consultation and engagement on proposed amendments to the Pacific Aquaculture Regulations in relation to a ban on open net-pen salmon aquaculture beyond the above timeframe.
