Infrastructure is a significant part of local government service delivery but is often underappreciated or overlooked by the public. This year’s theme for Local Government Awareness Week—May 12-18, 2024—invites local governments to tell the infrastructure story of their community or region, and the steps that are being taken to ensure sustainable service delivery.
Local governments in British Columbia were created to provide safe, sustainable, services. These services are integral to the health, safety and quality of life for our residents, and are delivered through the assets and amenities that local governments design, build, and maintain.
As we prepare for this year’s Local Government Awareness Week, community infrastructure is undergoing significant change across British Columbia.
- Climate change requires local governments to rethink the built environment to adapt to extreme weather events, while looking for ways to reduce corporate and community-wide emissions.
- A growing provincial population is creating even greater pressure to renew and expand core facilities and amenities to build complete communities.
- Local governments continue to strengthen their practice of asset management to support sustainable service delivery.
These issues are complex and require local government leadership to build awareness of the steps communities are taking to renew, expand and redevelop core facilities. Local Government Awareness Week provides a platform to engage with local residents and share insights into how the infrastructure of BC’s communities is changing to meet these challenges.
