Male allyship training for elected officials

Publishing Date

Male and men-identifying Indigenous and local government elected officials are invited to participate in a pilot training initiative focused on strengthening their ability to be allies to women and gender-diverse individuals confronted with sexism, racism, and other forms of harassment and violence. This initiative is developed by the Canadian Women in Local Leadership (CanWILL) project of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Interested elected officials are asked to notify FCM before September 30, 2022.

Details for the training initiative are as follows:

  • three (3) sessions of 90 min each (must attend all three sessions, as they are cumulative)
  • sessions will be offered monthly in Jan, Feb, and March 2023
  • training will be offered in English and French
  • participants will have access to individual coaching to support their learning
  • limited spots available, to foster a safe and conducive learning environment

Responding to a rise in hate, harassment, and violence directed at public figures, particularly women and gender-diverse individuals, FCM is offering a Male Allyship pilot initiative for local and Indigenous government elected officials that will focus on topics such as:

  • what it means to be an ally
  • actions can you take as an ally
  • ways to influence others to be effective allies

The skills acquired will equip participants to be better allies in all areas of influence: personally, professionally, and in the community.
