The UBCM Special Committee on Climate Action held its fifth meeting on January 30th, which focussed on mitigation and adaptation efforts at the local level. Representatives of the Climate Action Secretariat provided presentations on regional approaches to adaptation, as well as communication strategies for mobilizing public awareness and support of climate action.
Dr. Stephen Sheppard, from the Committee, also presented on strategies for supporting citizen engagement on climate action at the community and neighbourhood level.
The Committee reviewed a revised mitigation and adaptation paper with potential recommendations around local and provincial pathways of action. Those recommendations will be discussed in greater depth at the next meeting, along with a draft structure of a policy paper. The Committee also discussed UBCM’s upcoming Advocacy Days, as well as the potential for engagement with the membership at the area association conventions. The next meeting is scheduled for early March.
