WHEREAS smaller and less wealthy local governments have difficulty providing an appropriate level of remuneration to elected officials; AND WHEREAS currently 13 of local government elected officials remuneration is tax exempt: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that UBCM lobby the federal and provincial governments to offer a 1,000 non-refundable tax credit to local government elected officials in addition to the 13 tax exemption.

Provincial Response

MINISTRY OF FINANCE The federal income tax system provides an exemption of one third of a local government officials remuneration. Because the Province of British Columbia Province uses federally defined income, the exemption automatically applies to provincial personal income tax. The Province believes its support through the income exemption for elected officials is reasonable and appropriate.
