WHEREAS small businesses as well as community organizations in remote and rural communities rely on summer students to provide expanded levels of service during the summer months and to allow limited permanent staff to have some vacation time; AND WHEREAS students benefit from exposure to remote and rural communities and gain valuable knowledge from work experience that often influences them to return to remote and rural sites after graduation: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the UBCM call on both the British Columbia and federal governments to increase the availability of student summer work grants by increasing the types and numbers of grants available to medium and small sized remote and rural community organizations and small businesses.
