WHEREAS sitting as a Local Board of Health under the applicable sections of the Health Act gives local governments flexibility and opportunity to address matters of public health concern: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of British Columbia Municipalities support the continuation of Local Boards of Health to address matters of public health.
MINISTRY OF HEALTH The Ministry of Health Ministry supports an active role of local governments regarding public health and encourages local governments to utilize their authority under the Community Charter and Local Government Act to develop public health and related bylaws to protect and improve the health of their citizens. The Ministry is engaged in discussions with the Union of British Columbia Municipalities UBCM regarding local boards of health roles and their relationship to the powers and duties of medical health officers, environmental health officers, and regional health authorities under a proposed Public Health Act. The Ministry continues to have discussions with the UBCM to improve clarification and articulation of the roles, powers and duties of local government with respect to public health. The Ministry encourages local governments to work closely with public health officials and regional health authorities to collaboratively address public health matters of mutual concern.
