A new four-year electric kick scooter pilot project started on April 5, 2024. Over four years, residents and visitors in participating communities can try using this emerging form of personal transportation.
Local governments can join the pilot by passing a resolution and/or bylaw and communicating it to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The list of participating communities will be published on the pilot project website. Communities can continue to join after that date using the same process.
The first electric kick scooter pilot project ran from April 5, 2021 to April 5, 2024. The new pilot project provides further opportunity to test these devices and will help determine if and how these devices should be authorized for permanent use in BC.
The new Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation also makes enhancements under the updated legislative framework for pilot projects which was passed in Spring 2023. Key changes include simplified criteria to join and simplified annual reporting criteria.
If you are interested in further information on the pilot project, including how to join, please contact the Ministry of Transportation.
Information on the new pilot project, including rules for devices and operators, will be available on the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project website.
