UBCM signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Indigenous Relations & Reconciliation (MIRR) during the 2024 Convention. Prior to signing, UBCM asked the Province for a strengthened commitment in the form of an implementation plan, and proposed a draft workplan to be collaborated on by MIRR and UBCM.

MIRR acknowledged that the provincial government has some work ahead to enhance their engagement with local governments. They committed to collaborating with UBCM on implementation, including the shared workplan, following the election period. MIRR committed to an initial meeting prior to the end of October.

“Governments at all levels recognize that reconciliation means working together in partnership to achieve shared priorities. The Province recognizes the importance of having local governments actively involved in reconciliation, for the benefit of everyone who lives in B.C. The renewal of this Memorandum of Understanding underscores the commitment of both the Province and local governments to work in partnership with First Nations in B.C. to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action,” said Murray Rankin, Minister for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.

“We believe that local governments, with local knowledge and interest, are key partners in achieving lasting and meaningful reconciliation with First Nations. UBCM is pleased to be collaborating with the Province to advance this work and support local governments and First Nations to develop strong working relationships,” said Trish Mandewo, UBCM President.

On Monday, UBCM also signed a Relationship Protocol with the First Nations Leadership Council.
