Rail Safety Funding

Publishing Date

Local governments are invited to attend a Transport Canada information session about the Rail Safety Improvement Program (RSIP). This federal program provides grant funding to improve railway crossings so that the crossings meet the requirements of the Rail Safety Grade Crossings Regulations (GCR).

Existing public grade crossings must meet the requirements of the GCR by November 28, 2021. A public grade crossing consists of railway tracks that intersect with a road that is owned, open, and maintained by a public authority like a province, local government or band council, and is used by the public.

The information session will cover some of the key points for local governments to consider when applying for RSIP funding. The deadline for RSIP applications is August 1, 2020. While the key focus will be the RSIP, the information session will also include points of interest regarding the GCR requirements.

Two sessions are scheduled for February 2020. Depending on level of interest and how quickly the information session fills up, the same information session may be offered again in April and June.

  • French session: February 25, 2020 from 11:30 to 13:00 (EST)
  • English session: February 25, 2020 from 14:30 to 16:00 (EST)

Interested local governments should register for an information session by email.

Once registered, Transport Canada will provide a WebEx confirmation with instructions for that information session. Attendance is on a first come first served basis and with a maximum of 40 participants per session. Transport Canada anticipates that spots will fill up soon, so local governments are advised to register quickly.

General questions about RSIP may be emailed to Transport Canada.
