In June, the provincial government announced their active transportation strategy, called Move, Commute, Connect.
The strategy aims to double the percentage of trips taken by active transportation by 2030. Initiatives in the strategy include offering incentives that encourage active transportation use, investing more funds in the Bike BC program, and amending the Motor Vehicle Act.
Local governments will be key partners in the implementation of the strategy. In addition to increased funding for the Bike BC program, local governments:
- will be provided with planning and design support to ensure that community planning addresses active transportation constraints and opportunities.
- will have access to the newly developed B.C. Active Transportation Design Guide for infrastructure planning and construction.
As well, the Province noted that it will identify potential funding avenues for local government funding for active transportation, including the use of Development Cost Charges.
