Indigenous Cultural Safety Training

Provincial funding is available to provide emergency management personnel with cultural safety and cultural humility training in order to effectively partner with and provide safe and respectful assistance to Indigenous communities during times of emergency. The deadline for applications is Friday December 13th, 2019.

Program materials outline who is eligible to apply and the activities that may be funded. The intended applicants are local governments and First Nations whose emergency personnel support Indigenous communities in the event of emergencies. The training is intended to educate emergency management personnel and others working in the emergency management system on the history of Indigenous Peoples, as well as the concepts of cultural safety, cultural humility, and their relevance to Indigenous Peoples. Applicants are encouraged to partner with Indigenous communities to deliver the training.

UBCM administers this new grant stream, announced in May of 2019, under the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund. The funding stream was developed in alignment with recommendations from the Abbott and Chapman report, Addressing the New Normal21stCentury Disaster Management in BC
