Registration for the 2023 UBCM Convention will open on July 4. This will be the first in-person convention held in Vancouver since the pandemic, and we anticipate a strong turnout, so be sure to register quickly.

The theme for this year’s event (Balancing Act) acknowledges an essential element in the art of governance.

Local governments in B.C. have begun their term in an environment of uncertainty. Many households brace as the impacts of inflation settle in, and stresses around housing affordability and attainability mount. Local governments also feel this strain as they balance tight budgets, limited resources, and community growth. In the face of these urgent challenges, constituents continue to expect the ideals of good governance front and center—strong financial stewardship, transparency, and accountability.

B.C.’s local leaders are well-equipped to foster stability, fortified by the lessons of resiliency learned through the last few years. But we also recognize an urgent need to align our wellness with our professional responsibilities. To sustainably serve our communities, we must establish equilibrium with our physical, emotional and social well-being.

We also recognize that there are opportunities to flourish when we embrace inclusivity, balance perspectives, and widen our circles. Local governments and Indigenous communities continue to foster relationships and approaches to operations with UNDRIP and DRIPA at the fore. Together, communities are growing capacity and local solutions through varied knowledge and viewpoints.

Join us at the 2023 UBCM Convention in Vancouver September 18-22, where local leaders will be empowered to foster a balance that supports vibrant and resilient communities.
