Whereas there are not enough Class A government regulated beef slaughtering facilities available to meet the demands of the butchering needs for livestock farmers in the Southern Interior; And whereas in order to increase local food security, the sustainability and capacity of the local livestock producers by allowing local farmers the ability to slaughter onsite and sell to local farmers markets within their regional district: Therefore be it resolved that UBCM urge the Province to change the policy on allowing unlimited Class E licenses and a minimum number of Class D licenses market driven for local livestock producers.
Ministry of Agriculture Consumer safety is paramount. British Columbians can be confident that their provincial meat inspection system is continuing to support the highest standards of food safety. B.C. licensed abattoirs have significant health and safety protocols including food safety procedures for maintaining meat safety and facility hygiene. The Ministry works with applicants to support them in meeting all licensing requirements which provide a safe food supply for British Columbians. The Southern Interior Local Government Management Region currently has 18 provincially licensed Class A and B facilities and two federal facilities. Since 2014, two new facilities have opened. There is one application currently in process. A pilot program launched to review Class E licensing restrictions and conditions in 2015 will end in spring 2017. The Province will review the pilot and determine if any changes will be considered. The Province is not considering expanding availability of D licences beyond the current designated geographical zones. Any producer interested in initiating a slaughter establishment, Class A, B or E in the Regional District of North Okanagan, can contact the Ministry to discuss the licensing process and all available options.
