WHEREAS the provincial government made a commitment in 2008 that all rural communities would be provided with cellular phone service within three years and declared that all British Columbians should have 911 access for emergency reasons; AND WHEREAS many rural communities and vast areas of British Columbia are still without cellular coverage or access to 911 via cell phones, and the absence of these services pose a hazard to all who travel through the province and to emergency responders who use cellular as part of their communication toolbox: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that UBCM continue to lobby the provincial government and cellular providers to provide for the safety of the general public and first responders by ensuring that cellular phone coverage is available to all rural BC communities and their connecting corridors.
