WHEREAS municipal school lands and assets have historically been funded and developed jointly by municipal governments and boards of education for the benefit of their communities as defined by BC statutes; AND WHEREAS many local governments retain significant financial, legal and community planning interests in school lands and assets; AND WHEREAS the Ministry of Education has developed legislation and policy, without consultation with local governments, which does not provide for recognition of municipal land use regulations and community investment in school lands and assets: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Disposal of Land or Improvements Order M19308 and related policy be amended to require that local boards of education seek the approval of a local government prior to disposal andor lease of school lands and assets in order to determine their financial and legal interests in school lands prior to disposal; and ensure that the communitys planning for the use of public lands and assets is protected.
