WHEREAS the recently introduced carbon tax is discriminatory towards rural and particularly northern residents, who - Have fewer alternatives for public transit, need to be more reliant on personal vehicles and have to travel greater distances for essential services; - Have colder climate and require more heating fuel to heat their homes and businesses in comparison with the southern part of the province and - Have higher transportation costs for essential commodities including food; AND WHEREAS the 100 Climate Action Dividend is likewise discriminatory, as it doesnt reflect the differential costs experienced by rural and northern residents: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of British Columbia Municipalities lobby the provincial government to exempt the northern part of the province from the carbon tax which is punitive and inequitable towards northern residents.
