Maintenance of Public Highways

WHEREAS the provincial government awarded a 10-year contract to the private sector in 2003 for maintenance of public highways throughout the Province of BC; AND WHEREAS the Council of the Village of Sayward is dissatisfied with the deterioration of road surfaces and driving conditions on these highways; AND WHEREAS the number of vehicular accidents and fatalities has increased significantly over the past five years: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities request that the Ministry of Transportation revisit the public highway maintenance contract to determine if all the terms, conditions, specifications and standards with regard to public safety as contained in the contract are being met by the contractors.
