WHEREAS the Province has a long-standing history of mining, exploration and development; AND WHEREAS past activities have impacted on the local environment and the lives of residents: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities lobby the provincial government to enhance the public consultation process and ensure that the local government having jurisdiction is informed of mineral exploration and development initiatives that may impact its residents.

Provincial Response

Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Given the small footprint and low level of activity associated with most mineral and coal exploration projects, there is minimal potential for these projects to impact on municipalities. Mine developments are already referred to affected municipalities and this process will continue. MEMPR will continue the recent practice of referring any application for exploration for uranium to potentially affected local municipalities.
