WHEREAS many British Columbian communities are dealing with the ongoing leaky condo crisis and thousands of affected homeowners are struggling financially and emotionally; AND WHEREAS during the 2006 federal election, the Conservative party promised a review of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporations handling of the leaky condo crisis: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the UBCM urge the federal government to conduct a review of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporations handling of the leaky condo crisis, including possible restitution to affected homeowners.
MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCES AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT With respect to the UBCM resolution B130 concerning moisture-damaged housing in British Columbia, please be assured that Canadas new government remains committed to reviewing the leaky condo issue. As you may be aware, a class action lawsuit regarding this matter has been brought before the British Columbia court, naming Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation as a defendant. The federal government is examining its options to proceed with a review of the leaky condos issue without compromising the current legal proceedings.
