Federal Response

MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS This Government recognizes that the dangers associated with the production, trafficking and use of illicit drugs is a serious issue that affects all Canadians, and that no single jurisdiction can combat this problem on its own. Continued cooperation at the federal, provincial and territorial level is critical to effectively address this issue. We are continuing to work in partnership with our provincial, municipal and territorial partners on a balanced approached to reduce both the supply of drugs and demand for these substances, particularly among our most vulnerable population, our youth. This Government is committed to implementing a national drug strategy with an emphasis on dissuading young people from using drugs. It is also committed to fighting drug-related crimes plaguing our communities by introducing clear mandatory minimum prison sentences for serious offenses such as trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, importing, exporting, possession for the purpose of exporting, and production. Moreover, in Budget 2006, the Government dedicated 20 million for communities to prevent youth crime with a focus on guns, gangs and drugs. Prevention activities are crucial if we want to steer our youth away from the threat of drugs and crime. These measures will help mitigate the negative impacts of crime and illicit drugs in our communities. This Government will continue to take the necessary steps to make our communities safer. There is no more important role for government than ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
