Development Near Railway Operations

Publishing Date

UBCM would like to know which BC local governments or First Nations have adopted the FCM-RAC Guidelines for New Development in Proximity to Railway Operations (Proximity Guidelines), and whether they have adopted the guidelines in whole, in part, or made amendments.

Local government or First Nations senior staff (CAO, development services, planning), or those with technical experience regarding development near railways, are encouraged to complete a short survey to explain whether—and how—your community uses the Proximity Guidelines to address development near railways. Responses are welcomed until January 31, 2020.

The Proximity Guidelines encourage proactive planning. They support communities, railways, developers, and property owners to reduce land-use incompatibilities for developing on lands in proximity to railways. Published in 2013, the Proximity Guidelines were developed jointly by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the Railway Association of Canada (RAC).

Contact Reiko Tagami, Policy Analyst, for further information about this survey on implementation of the Proximity Guidelines.
