Active Transportation in Small Towns: Survey

Publishing Date

The BC Alliance for Healthy Living wants to hear from local government staff working on active transportation in communities with populations between 1,000 and 30,000. Staff can fill out the ‘Small Town Leaders in Active Transportation’ survey by November 30. The project will examine how small communities incorporate active transportation, and will share outcomes and resources.

In collaboration with the Union of BC Municipalities, the Active Transportation in Small Towns project aims to examine and showcase how small communities incorporate active travel such as walking, riding and rolling to work, school or other community destinations. While there is much information about active transportation in larger cities, there are gaps in knowledge about what works in small towns. For the purposes of this project, a small town is defined as a community with a population between 1,000 and 30,000 people.

With the information collected, BCAHL will report on the factors that enable and enhance active transportation in BC small towns. Relevant lessons and case studies will be shared through a series of workshops and webinars to build active transportation capacity in BC small towns.

The CAO or another staff member who is involved in active transportation may complete the survey. Responses are welcome from all small towns, regardless of progress on active transportation. The survey explores what has helped increase active transportation in those communities, and what barriers still exist to cycling and walking.

The survey is open throughout November, and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Please complete the survey soon to ensure that your community's perspective is contributed. All respondents can enter a draw for one of two $50 Visa gift cards.
