Legalization Regulation of Cannabis

Whereas the Government of Canada is moving towards the legalization and regulation of cannabis, as outlined in the final report of the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation, dated November 30, 2016, entitled, A Framework for the Legalization and Regulation of Cannabis in Canada; And whereas the introduction of this new affluent industry will have significant cost implications for municipalities in terms of licensing, inspections and enforcement; And whereas the burden of implementation could unfairly fall on municipalities to fund: Therefore be it resolved that UBCM request the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia to include local and First Nation governments in the tax regime recommended in the Final Report of the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation, dated November 30, 2016, entitled, A Framework for the Legalization and Regulation of Cannabis in Canada, to equitably distribute revenues from the legalization and regulation of cannabis.
