WHEREAS there are no remand facilities for women within the interior of British Columbia; AND WHEREAS when women from the interior require remand, they are held in local jail cells not meant for long-term incarceration or transferred to the Lower Mainland and housed in the Alouette Correctional Centre; AND WHEREAS these women are removed from families and support systems in their own communities reducing the opportunities to rebuild their lives in a safe, supportive atmosphere which impacts their risk of reoffending: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that UBCM lobby the provincial government to provide a remand centre for women in the interior of British Columbia.
