WHEREAS the Province of British Columbia has enacted new Meat Inspection Regulations under the Food Safety Act requiring abattoirs that produce meat for human consumption be either provincially or federally licensed; AND WHEREAS these new Meat Inspection Regulations will likely force small rural meat processing plants to close which in turn will require rural family farm operators to transport animals greater distances for processing and incur greater expense: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Union of British Columbia Municipalities lobby the Province of British Columbia to review the Meat Inspection Regulations and enact changes to the regulations to enable small rural abattoirs the ability to provide meat processing services in the rural areas in an economically viable way.
