WHEREAS there are many slopes along provincial highways classified as high hazard; AND WHEREAS slides on highways are a serious safety hazard for travelers, may block emergency vehicles, and create economic hardship: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities urge the Province of British Columbia to commit much greater resources to slope stabilization projects across the province.

Provincial Response

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION The Ministry of Transportation does not have a general program to prevent slope failures as these are identified and repaired on an individual basis. However, we do have a Rock Stabilization Program, which entails the monitoring and maintenance of rock slopes adjacent to the highways. Techniques include excavation of hazards, slope reinforcement, redirection of falling debris and groundwater pressure reduction. This program is typically funded at 3.5M to 4M per year funding levels are evaluated on an annual basis and distributed based on the relative priorities with other program areas.
