WHEREAS the Royal Canadian Mounted Police include in their Mission Statement a commitment to provide quality service in partnership with our communities, and Officers involved in Detachment Policing are advised that they must also be aware of the specific problems or features of the community and are encouraged to participate in policecommunity programs e.g. community service clubs, sports activities, guidingscouting movements, etc.; AND WHEREAS the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Police Services Division, identifies one of its primary responsibilities as ensuring adequate and effective levels of policing enforcement throughout British Columbia and the trend of RCMP Officers in small communities to not reside within their communities impacts not only the emergency response time but also their ability to become appropriately aware and knowledgeable of their community and its citizens: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities urge the Solicitor General to work with the RCMP to develop incentives, policies and programs that will encourage RCMP Officers to reside in the community in which they serve.

Provincial Response

MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND SOLICITOR GENERAL Like every other Canadian, RCMP officers have the right to choose where they live. While the RCMP cannot dictate where their members reside, it does encourage its members to become actively involved in their community. As an incentive, members are recognized during their competency and performance evaluation for positively contributing to their community.
