WHEREAS the City of Fort St. John has requested that the provincial government provide funding for the implementation of a successful alternative justice program, and the City of Williams Lake has concerns regarding the financial implications of such a request if applied to all municipalities in BC; AND WHEREAS the City of Williams Lake has developed an Alternative Justice program based completely on volunteers, which is very successful and has been held as an example of efficiency and success throughout the province: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the provincial government, the Union of BC Municipalities and member municipalities review and, wherever possible, encourage communities in BC to adopt the Williams Lake Alternative Justice program model; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, in support of the request from the City of Fort St. John, the provincial government be requested to give consideration to the provision of adequate funding to those communities unable to implement this program through the use of volunteers.
