UBCM Executive and staff are saddened to hear of the passing of Merritt Councillor Claire Newman last week.
Claire was just six months into her first term as a councillor in Merritt, but had served as a councillor in Logan Lake for 14 years. She was on her way to pick up her husband in Alberta, when she was struck by a vehicle on July 4 near Valemount.
“To lose a light like Claire Newman in such a tragic way has left a giant hole in my heart and the heart of everyone who came into contact with her,” Mayor Michael Goetz said.
“Claire was the cheerleader of this Council and a driving force that you rarely come across. Getting to know Claire over the past six months has been a great pleasure, and I am a better person for having known her. To her family and friends, I offer my deepest sympathies. Claire, you will be missed.”
In Merritt, Claire had quickly become part of the community, earning a reputation as someone who “was vibrant, curious, and had a passion for people that was contagious,” according to the city’s chief administrative officer, Sean Smith.
“We are so sad to learn of Claire’s passing. She was a passionate community leader, who dedicated much of her life to serving those around her. She was well-liked and admired by her colleagues and constituents, and she will be deeply missed,” said Jen Ford, President of the Union of BC Municipalities.
Claire is survived by her husband, daughter, and parents. Merritt City Hall has lowered its flags to half-mast in her honour, and will hold a ceremony to mark her passing instead of its next council meeting.
It’s possible the accident was a hit and run. Valemount RCMP want to speak with the driver of a grey Jeep Cherokee whose headlight assembly was found at the scene.
