Classification of Volunteer Firefighters as Local Government Employees

WHEREAS the Local Government Act was amended in 2008 to note that volunteer firefighters are classified as employees for the purpose of local government elections; AND WHEREAS this amendment to the Local Government Act disqualifies volunteer firefighters from being elected to a local government position: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Minister of Community Development be requested to further amend the Local Government Act to permit volunteer firefighters to hold public office for a local government in British Columbia.
